How to Track QR Code Scans: Setup, Data, and Limits

How to track QR code scans: set up a dynamic code, read the time, location, and device data, and avoid the mistakes and limits that skew the numbers.

To track QR code scans, the code has to be dynamic: it holds a short link that records each scan and then forwards the phone to your page. Make one with the free trackable QR code generator, then read the results in your dashboard: how many people scanned, when, roughly where, and on what kind of device.

This guide covers how scan tracking works, how to set it up so the numbers mean something, what the data tells you (and what it does not), and the mistakes that quietly ruin it.

How QR code scan tracking works

A static QR code stores your web address directly in the pattern. The phone reads it and goes straight to your page, so nothing in between can count the visit, and the address can never change.

A trackable QR code, also called a dynamic QR code, stores a short link instead. The scan passes through that link, which records it and then forwards the phone to your destination. That one extra hop gives you two things:

  • Every scan is counted. The record is made before the visitor reaches your page, so you do not need to add anything to your website.
  • The destination can change. The printed pattern only holds the short link. Change where it forwards to and every printed copy follows.

On QRelix every code works this way, so there is no tracking setting to switch on. The docs explain the difference in static vs dynamic QR codes.

How to set up scan tracking

It takes a few minutes:

  • Step 1: Prepare the destination. Point the code at a page made for it, such as yoursite.com/spring-menu, rather than your homepage. Prefer not to build a page? Pick a hosted page instead: QRelix builds a mobile menu, PDF, link in bio, or business card page for you.
  • Step 2: Open the trackable QR code generator and choose a type. URL opens any web page; the Hosted pages tiles build a page in the same step.
  • Step 3: Name the code after where it will live, for example "Table tent: patio" or "Flyer: farmers market". Separate names are what make the numbers useful later.
  • Step 4: Design it with your colors and logo. Keep dark dots on a light background so it scans easily.
  • Step 5: Add protection if you need it. Password, expiration date, scan limit, location, and opening hours are all optional and included on every plan.
  • Step 6: Download and test. Use SVG for print and PNG for screens. Scan it with two different phones, then print one copy at final size and scan it from where people will actually stand.

Your first test scan appears in the dashboard right away, which is the easiest proof that tracking works.

What the tracking data shows

[@portabletext/react] Unknown block type "guideVideo", specify a component for it in the `components.types` prop

Open the code in your dashboard and click Analytics to see:

  • Total scans and unique visitors, with repeat scans told apart from new people.
  • When each scan happened, by day and by hour, so you can spot your peak times.
  • Where it happened: country, region, and city, estimated from the scanner's connection. With location permission turned on, phones can share a more precise position.
  • What it was scanned with: phone or tablet, operating system, and browser.
  • A scan log listing every scan, which you can filter and export as CSV.

What tracking does not tell you

A trackable QR code does not tell you who scanned it. QRelix asks scanners for no name, email address, or phone number. If you need to know who a visitor is, point the code at a sign-up or contact form and let people tell you.

How to know when someone scans your code

Scans appear in your dashboard in real time. You can also turn on email alerts in Settings: a note on a code's first scan, a heads-up when scans spike, and a weekly scan report across all your codes.

Four ways to use the numbers

  • Compare placements. A bakery prints the same "order ahead" card for the counter, the delivery bag, and the front window, with a separate code on each. After a month the bag code has 46 scans, the counter 21, and the window 6. The bags are doing the work, and the window sign needs a clearer call to action. One shared code would have reported 73 scans and nothing else.
  • Find the right time. If a lunch menu code is scanned mostly between 11:30 and 1:00, that is when the daily special should already be on the page behind it.
  • Fix a mistake without reprinting. A flyer goes out with last year's registration link. Edit the destination once and every flyer already handed out points to the right page.
  • Check what happens after the scan. A counter sign for Google reviews gets 50 scans in a month but only 2 new reviews. The sign works and the page behind it does not, so the fix is the wording of the request, not the placement.

Follow visitors into Google Analytics

QRelix counts the scan. To see what visitors do on your site afterwards, add UTM tags. With UTM & Pixels you save a template once (source, medium, campaign) and QRelix adds the tags to every scan automatically, on every plan, so you never hand-edit a link. Our Google Analytics 4 setup guide walks through reading the results.

Can you make a QR code you already printed trackable?

Not if it is static. A static code sends phones straight to your address, so there is no redirect to record the scan. Two options:

  • Mirror it. Upload a photo of the old code and the Mirrored QR type makes a new trackable code that goes to the same place. Swap it in on your next print run.
  • Tag the destination. Add UTM tags to the page the old code opens, so at least the visits show up in your web analytics.

If the printed code is already dynamic, tracking has been running since its first scan.

Mistakes that break QR code tracking

  • One code on every placement. The flyer, the poster, and the receipt then share one combined number. Make a code for each.
  • Sending scans to your homepage. A dedicated page keeps QR visits separate in your web analytics.
  • Skipping the test scan. A typo in the destination is easy to fix on a dynamic code, but only if you notice it.
  • Tiny or low-contrast codes. Print at least 2 cm (0.8 in) across for close range, larger for posters, and keep the contrast strong.
  • Printing a busy placement on the free plan. Each free code gets 20 scans a month, then pauses until the 1st of next month (or until you upgrade), so check expected volume before you print.

Free plan limits that affect your numbers

Tracking is included on every QRelix plan, so the limits are on volume, not data. Each free code serves 20 scans a month and shows a brief QRelix screen before forwarding. At 20 in a month it pauses until the 1st of the next month. The first code on your account to pass 20 gets 30 more scans, once, with one extra tap on that screen. QRelix Pro ($5.99 a month) removes the screen, the tap, and the pause.

A code on a wedding invitation or a single shelf label may never reach 20 scans in a month. A code on every delivery bag will reach it within days and needs Pro. See pricing for the full comparison.

QR code tracking questions

Is a trackable QR code the same as a dynamic QR code?

On QRelix, yes. Every code is dynamic, and every dynamic code counts its scans.

Do people need an app to scan it?

No. It scans with a normal phone camera, like any QR code.

Can I change where it points after printing?

Yes. Edit the destination in your dashboard. The printed code stays the same and the next scan goes to the new page.

Does tracking identify the person who scanned?

No. You see the time, device, browser, and an approximate location for each scan, never a name or contact details.

What happens to my codes if I cancel Pro?

Nothing is deleted. Codes go back to the free plan's rules: the QRelix screen returns, and each code pauses at 20 scans in a month.

Start tracking your first code

Open the trackable QR code generator, make a code, and scan it with your own phone. Your first scan shows up in the dashboard a moment later.
